Graduation Requirement

To graduate, candidates must fulfill all course requirements within their maximum candidature period (4 semesters for full-time and 6 semesters for part-time). The following grade scheme is used:

A student pursuing a Master's degree by coursework must achieve a minimum CAP of 3.0 to be eligible for graduation.

To continue in a Master's programme, a student may not have:

  • CAP below 3.0 (but ≥ 2.5) for three consecutive semesters; or
  • CAP below 2.5 for two consecutive semesters.

For any semester in which the student's CAP falls below 3.0 (but ≥ 2.5), that student will be issued an academic warning. If, in the following semester, the student's CAP again falls below 3.0, he/she will be placed on probation. If the student's CAP remains below 3.0 for the third consecutive semester, the student will be issued a letter of dismissal by the Registrar and denied re-admission.

For students whose CAP falls below 2.5 for two consecutive semesters, they will be placed on probation for the first semester, followed by dismissal in the second semester.

A. Students With Illnesses During Examination Period

  1. A candidate who wishes to take examinations in hospitals must give at least two working days' notice to the Department. Where such notice could not be given, the candidate is advised to submit a yellow form for consideration by the Board of Examiners.
  2. A candidate who is already warded in a hospital during the examination period and who wishes to take examinations in the hospital must give at least two working days' notice to the Department.
  3. A candidate with an infectious disease (e.g. chicken pox) may request to take the examination in an isolated location. Such a candidate must give ample notice for the Registrar's Office/Department to conduct the examination in a special location. Candidates with other serious and highly contagious/infectious diseases will not be allowed to take the examination.
  4. Candidates must submit the yellow form within 48 hours after their last paper, indicating the reasons. The yellow form is available at the Registrar's Office, Dean's Office or can be downloaded from http://www.nus.edu.sg/registrar/adminpolicy/LOA.html. All yellow forms submitted by graduates and undergraduates must be forwarded to the SDE Dean's Office.

B. Procedure for Appeals against Dismissal

  1. Every student is allowed only ONE appeal.
  2. Appeals should be addressed to the Vice-Dean (Academic) and submitted to the SDE Dean's Office.
  3. Appeals must be made within 2 calendar weeks of the release of exam results.
  4. Late submissions will not be accepted.

Application forms (available at the Departments) are to be submitted within 3 days from the date of announcement of results.
