Position: Research Fellow

Job Purpose

This research fellow will be involved in a Virtual Campus project for a period of 2 years.

About the research project
This pilot study is devoted to the development of an urban microclimate model for the local Singapore environment, and to use the NUS Kent Ridge campus as a test-bed environment for model calibration and validation. Ambient temperature, wind speed, and thermal comfort at urban canopy layer on campus will be predicted using the developed urban microclimate model factoring the impacts of various

The project has the following objectives:

  • Develop an multiscale microclimate model for simulating the UHI effect (mesoscale phenomenon) and local hotspots (microscale) on the neighborhood scale;
  • Integration of the urban microclimate model to the 3-dimensional model of the NUS campus, i.e. Virtual NUS, for enhanced simulation and visualization.
  • Use the NUS Kent Ridge Campus to validate the developed model;

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Deploy and manage sensors for field measurement
  • Conduct CFD simulations
  • Do analysis on the data collected, write research reports and publish academic papers
  • Conduct work actively and independently
  • Assist the Principal Investigator in general administrative management of the research project

Requirements

  • Good knowledge on urban physics and the use of simulation tools and field measurement for urban environment
  • Proficient in CFD simulation packages
  • Familiar with the instrumentation for measurement of urban ambient conditions such as air temperature, humidity, solar radiation, wind flow etc.
  • Good scientific writing and communication skills (in English)
  • Good team work
  • Good problem solving skills

Position: Research Fellow

Reporting to: Dean, Vice Dean (Research)


This research fellow will be involved as research program manager in the Dean Office, School of Design and Environment (SDE) for a period of 2 years, working closely with the Vice Dean (Research) to manage and coordinate the research activities of SDE.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist the Vice Dean (Research) to link the academic staff within SDE and outside the School to pitch for major grant calls
  • Development and writing of research proposals at SDE
  • Vet research reports, administer grants and contracts and liaise with funding agencies for grant calls.
  • Coordination of the research collaborators within SDE and with other faculties
  • Dissemination of research and knowledge in SDE and linking to SDE academic programs
  • Coordinate meetings with visitors
  • Market and showcase SDE research achievements

Requirements

  • Preferably PhD degree in Architecture, Building Science or Architectural Engineering with the PhD focus on Sustainability issues related to the Built Environment
  • Preferably have some prior experience in research project proposal development and writing as well as management of research projects
  • Good scientific writing and communication skills (in English)
  • Good team work
  • Good problem solving skills

Background

The Department of Real Estate in NUS, seeks to advance holistic knowledge of real estate and urban development for sustainable and inclusive urbanization in Asia through innovative research and teaching. The Department has an excellent research track record and connection with global research communities in real estate finance, urban economics and city planning. The NUS Institute of Real Estate Studies (IRES) and School of Design and Environment (SDE) Centre for Sustainable Asian Cities (CSAC) provide platforms and support for multidisciplinary real estate research.

The Department offers several academic programmes, including BSc Real Estate, MSc Real Estate, a double degree programme with NUS Business School (MSc Real Estate and MBA), a double degree programme with Renmin University (China) Business School (MSc Real Estate and MBA), a joint Master of Urban Planning programme with Department of Architecture, and a PhD programme in Real Estate and Urban Planning.

Department Head

NUS seeks to hire an internationally recognized leading academic scholar with strong experience in academic-industry collaborations for appointment as Head of Department of Real Estate, starting in January 2018, for an initial term of three years.

The appointment of the Department Head will be approved by the Provost. He/ She is the administrative and main academic officer of the department and as such has the primary responsibility and authority for leadership in:

  • Developing high quality academic programmes (both curricular and research) which fulfill Department, School and University objectives;
  • Implementation of University policies and programmes at the Department level;
  • Planning and developing resources and their requisitions; and
  • Serve on relevant School Board or Executive Committees

The Department Head is primarily an academic leader and scholar serving as a leader of the faculty members in the unit. He/ She is a role model for faculty responsibility and performance. The Department Head is responsible for providing mechanisms and processes for faculty members’ participation in discussion and decision making within the unit. He/ She is expected to communicate faculty perspectives and concerns to the Deanery and University administration and vice versa, as well as other segments of the community as appropriate. He/ She is also expected to monitor the relevance of the programmes in relation to the economic and market conditions and to tailor programmes towards meeting such needs.

The Department Head should be an internationally recognized academic leader in the relevant field and qualify for a full professorship with tenure in NUS. The appointment of Head of Department of Real Estate will also hold the title of the Ng Teng Fong Chair Professor, a full-time endowed chair position with generous support for research.
